Balmoral Syrah 1995 This outstanding McLaren Vale Syrah was named Balmoral after the Oatley family homestead, built in 1852. Sourcing the best quality fruit from 50-100 year old McLaren Vale vineyards, the wine was first produced in 1989 and in 1992 it was named Balmoral. Balmoral is a highly stylised wine, reflecting old vine South Australian Syrah. Its velvety palate structure and rich expressive fruit has made it an extremely sought after wine in previous years and each vintage continues to build on its reputation. Vineyard Region McLaren Vale Vintage Conditions The 1995 vintage was characteristically dry and hot throughout the majority of Australia. McLaren Vale fared better than most and the deep rooted old vines were able to avoid any heat/drought stress. The resulting fruit had typically small berries with deep colour and high levels of ripe skin tannin. An excellent result from a difficult vintage. Grape Variety Shiraz (Syrah) Maturation Matured in new and one year old American oak barrels for just over 20 months. Top Awards Trophy 2001 Canberra Wine Show Winemaker Comments: Philip Shaw Colour Dark brick red with excellent clarity and depth of colour. Nose A lifted aroma of spice and dark berries combines with subdued oak characters to give a particularly complex nose. Palate A palate of black cherry and chocolate is overlaid by spice and brambles finishing with noticeably long, fine tannins. The palate is well integrated and, for all its elegance, this is a wine of noticeable structure and staying power.
