Bin 389 is a very traditional Australian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz and today it is truly a multi regional blend drawing from as many as seven different regions depending on the vintage. Although quite different to Grange it is unmistakably Penfolds in style, with fleshy, ripe fruit flavours and chary oak. This vintage of Bin 389 is outstanding and will rival the classic vintage of 1990 in the years to come.

Vineyard Region

Padthaway, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Bordertown, South Australia

Vintage Conditions

A fter the drought conditions in 1995, much needed rains replenished the soils during the winter across most of South Australia. The first half of the growing season was dry and cool, allowing the fruit to set and mature slowly. The last two months of the season warmed to bring in physically mature, ripe complex fruit.

Grape variety Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz (Syrah)

Maturation A ged 14 months in new (25%) and used American oak.

Colour Deep plum red.

Nose A classic Bin 389 nose with massive fruit, smoky oak and tobacco leaf complemented by floral and vanilla bean notes.

Palate A full-bodied wine. A large burst of concentrated spicy, plummy Cabernet and Shiraz fruit hangs on the mid-palate, leading to a finish that reveals spicy oak, liquorice and packed tannins with lingering flavours of chocolate and fruit.
