Show Reserve McLaren Vale Shiraz 1996

Our Show Reserve label is applied to wines which have been held in our winery cellars for special maturation after they are identified as having particularly fine varietal characteristics in early barrel assessments following vintage. McLaren Vale is recognised for its tradition of high quality red wines, particularly those produced from low-yielding older Shiraz vines, which have been grown in the region for over one hundred years.

Vintage Conditions

A majority of the fruit is sourced from vines between 50 and 100 years of age on drained sandy loam soils. The 1996 vintage experienced mostly mild conditions, followed by the typical shortage of summer rain, with the vines relying on subsoil moisture from the winter rain previous. The fruit was harvested in mid April and was dark in appearance and rich in flavour and ripe tannins.

Maturation

The fruit was gently crushed and pumped to traditional fermenters. The must was pumped over twice daily throughout a warm fermentation. The wine was racked off skins and matured for 23 months in new and 2 year old American oak barrels.

Colour

Deep red with an intense rim of ruby and purple hues.

Nose

Spicy, rich berry characters are prominent.

Palate

The palate exudes fruit richness and a well integrated, firm tannin structure. A fine, underlying acidity holds the wine in balance and sustains the flavours through to a long spicy, almost smoky finish. This wine epitomises the richly focused dark fruit flavours and vibrant spiced finish that typifies old wines McLaren Vale Shiraz
