Chalambar Shiraz 1996 Seppelt Chalambar Shiraz, first created by the legendary Colin Preece during his 30-something year reign at Seppelt Great Western Winery in western Victoria, was one of the great wine names of the 50s and 60s. Since 1990, Chalambar has proved a consistent award winner on the show circuit. Historically, Chalambar was made predominantly from Great Western shiraz, as is this blend, which also includes shiraz from the Ovens Valley, Strathbogie Ranges and Bendigo. Regional Source Great Western, Ovens Valley, Strathbogie Ranges and Bendigo in Victoria. Vintage Conditions Good rains during the 1996 vintage growing season promoted strong growth and were followed by an unusually cool summer which resulted in Shiraz with great flavour. Grape Variety Shiraz (Syrah) Maturation New and one-year-old French and American oak for 12 months. Winemaker Comments: Ian McKenzie Colour Medium dark red Nose Attractive, ripe, spicy, peppery Shiraz characters with plummy overtones and integrated toasty oak. Palate This medium bodied Shiraz features excellent spicy and peppery berry fruit characters. The palate shows hints of plums, chocolate and earthiness all of which are complexed by attractive toasty oak and supple tannins. With an excellent mid-palate and length, this is a very good example of Victorian Shiraz. Wine Analysis Alc/Vol: 13.5% Acidity: 6.70g/L pH: 3.50 Food Matches Ideally suited to Beef, Cheese |
