Wynns Coonawarra Estate Shiraz has developed a reputation as a consistent, top-quality table wine. The emphasis is on making a wine with distinctive cool-climate Coonawarra Shiraz fruit characters. A combination of American and French oak is used to mature and increase the wine's complexity but not to dominate the black pepper and mulberry characteristics that are typical of Coonawarra Shiraz. Vineyard Region Coonawarra Vintage Conditions The 1996/97 Coonawarra growing season produced low-yielding Shiraz which intensified the fruit's flavours. Grape Variety Shiraz (Syrah) Maturation 10 months in a combination of new and used American and French Oak. Winemaker Comments: Sue Hodder Colour. Deep, dark red with purple hues. Nose. A ripe and spicy wine showing dark berry and black pepper aromas. Palate. The palate is smooth and well balanced and highlights light cedary oak and sweet fruit. Fine-grained tannins underpin the wine and add to its great length of flavour.
