Readers with masochistic tendencies may want to check out d'Arenberg's tannic, structured, and austere The Twentyeight Road Mourvedre. It is reminiscent of a French Bandol (the charming Mediterranean coastal town famous for long-lived Mourvedre-based wines). The wine possesses considerable tannin levels, earthy, peppery, black cherry and currant notes, and dusty, rustic finishes. It is not for everybody, but it is authentic and well-made. It should drink well for a decade.
