This well respected noble red variety originated in the Rhône Valley of France where it is known as Syrah. In Australia, Shiraz has become the most planted red grape, renowned for its rich, spicy, mulberrylike flavours. The vine is strong growing with a tendency to spread.Grape bunches tend to be long; producing small to medium sized oval berries. A renowned Mitchelton specialty.

Wine Attributes

The wine is deep crimson in colour, showing aromas of ripe black cherries, violets, plum pudding and spice combined with nuances of ash and earth developing with bottle maturation. The palate is well proportioned and textured, with sweet fruit flavours balanced by long fine tannins.

Vineyard Information The fruit was sourced from the Mitchelton estate where soils range from sandy loam to shale clay. Crescent and D blocks on the Mitchelton Estate contribute the violet and plum characters and freshness.A further portion, from nearby Northwood vineyard, provides the spicy, refined notes of elegance.

Vintage 1998 was a dream vintage, with good spring rains followed by a warm, dry summer. The warmth extended into Autumn, ensuring perfect ripening conditions, ideal for bringing grapes to optimum maturity early in the dry grown part of our vineyard.

Winemaking Techniques

Submerged cap fermentation is conducted using heading down boards, after which the wine goes into predominantly French oak for partial barrel fermentation and extended post fermentation skin contact. The wine is then aged in barrel for a further 20 months. Components are allowed to mature and develop individually before assessment and assembling of the final wine.

First produced in 1980, past vintages carried labels featuring Australian artwork commissioned under the Mitchelton Print Award. From 1998 onwards Print carries the "In Woo’s Wood" print by Tim Jones, which featured on the 1992 wine, a year recognised as setting the benchmark in wine quality and style.
