Balmoral Syrah 1998

This outstanding McLaren Vale Syrah was named Balmoral after the Oatley family homestead, built in 1852. Sourcing the best quality fruit from 50-100 year old McLaren Vale vineyards, the wine was first produced in 1989 and in 1992 it was named Balmoral. Balmoral is a highly stylised wine, reflecting old vine South Australian Syrah. Its velvety palate structure and rich expressive fruit has made it an extremely sought after wine in previous years and each vintage continues to build on its reputation.

Vineyard Region

McLaren Vale

Vintage Conditions

Late winter showers facilitated an even budburst, flowering and fruit-set. The lack of really hot weather and frequent cold nights played a central role in fixing acid, tannin and colour stability in the grapes and produced Syrah with intense colour, excellent varietal flavour and fine tannin structure. Hotter weather in March concentrated fruit flavours and accelerated final ripening.

Grape Variety

Shiraz (Syrah)

Maturation

A small proportion of the wine was run off skins to finish fermentation in barrel whilst the balance received an extended post fermentation maceration to fully extract ripe tannins. Matured for 2 years in American oak.

Colour

A deep purple/plum colour with a youthful pink rim.

Nose

A powerful nose of lifted spice, earth and sweet blackcurrant and plum aromas is supported perfectly by the sweet charry characters of American oak.

Palate

The palate shows the typical full length, expressive fruit and soft richness that defines Balmoral. The concentration of berry fruits, cloves and spices wrapped tightly together and complemented by perfectly judged oak and fine grained tannins combine into a seamless, lingering finish.
