Mountain Blue Shiraz Cabernet 1998

Mountain Blue is the jewel in the crown of Rosemount's newly developed vineyard estate in Mudgee, on the western slopes of the Blue Mountains in New South Wales. Here, the dry autumns and cool mountain nights allow red grapes of the highest quality to ripen to perfection. Mountain Blue is an exceptional premium blend of Shiraz and Cabernet

Sauvignon reflecting the regional attributes of the Mudgee terroir. Its densely textured blackberry fruit and impressive tannin richness has made it one of the most awarded wines to hit the Australian and international wine scene in recent years.

Regional Source

Mountain Blue Vineyard, Mudgee, New South Wales

Vintage Conditions

The dry conditions of 1998 meant that the older vines of our Mountain Blue vineyard fared better than younger vineyards, having deeper root systems with which to successfully forage for water. Some early summer rain enabled good vine development.

Grape Variety

Shiraz (Syrah), Cabernet Sauvignon

Maturation

The Shiraz was left to macerate for 5 days after fermentation to extract softer tannins. Both wines were then racked into 50/50 new French and American oak for 2 years.

Top Awards

Double Gold 2001 San Francisco International Wine Competition

Winemaker Comments:

Philip Shaw

Colour

A dense, almost opaque deep red with purple overtones.

Nose

A powerful, brooding nose of dark cherry and chocolate fruit aromas with a touch of dusty spice. A hint of sweet vanillin oak has integrated well and matched perfectly to the intense fruit.

Palate

An intense but balanced palate with an extraordinary array of rich fruit flavours, defining structure and great length .Blackcurrant, chocolate and plum flavours are sustained by ripe, smooth tannins and the dusty charred characters of well integrated oak.
