Historically, Chalambar was made predominantly from Great Western Shiraz. Today's Chalambar almost always includes a Great Western component, as well as Shiraz drawn from cool and cold climate Victorian regions. Regional Source Bendigo, Great Western, Grampians, Seymour, Bright/Mt Beauty and the Strathbogie Ranges in Victoria. Vintage Conditions This wine reflects an excellent hot and dry 1998 vintage, which resulted in red wines of concentration and very good ageing potential. Grape Variety -Shiraz (Syrah) Maturation Matured in 50% French and 50% American oak hogsheads for 18 months. Winemaker Comments: Ian McKenzie Colour. Dark medium red with purple hues. Nose Attractive blackcurrant and spice overlaid with rich, ripe, plummy fruit integrated with toasty vanillin oak characters. Palate The concentrated plummy and berry fruit characters are echoed on the medium bodied palate. The wine has a dense mid-palate and a fine, elegant tannin structure, which is typical of central Victorian Shiraz. The palate is complexed by toasty vanillin oak and the whole produces a wine of structure and length.
