DESCRIPTION The 1998 vintage has been hailed by many as the ‘vintage of the decade’. St Andrews Riesling is crafted from only the best parcels of fruit sourced on the Taylor family estate in the Clare Valley- a region world-renowned in the production of riesling. The weather conditions for the 1998 vintage can be characterised as having cool ripening conditions followed by a warm summer. The fruit was harvested at night in late March. The fermentation was carried out in stainless steel at 18°C. The wine was bottled in late 1998 and has been carefully cellared since then. WINE COLOUR A vibrant yellow with hints of gold and a faint green tinge to the hue. WINE BOUQUET The wine has a wonderfully lifted clean and fresh aroma. Lime and green apple marry harmoniously with orange marmalade, buttered toast and honey. WINE PALATE This wine shows the complexity of aged riesling while maintaining its youthful acidity. Lime marmalade, toast and honey can be used to describe the complex palate. Lively acidity ensures the wines elegant balance and longevity. The wine has a soft but refreshing finish and long persistance of flavour. SUGGESTED FOOD MATCHING To be enjoy by itself or with any light seafood combination. Spicy Calamari, char grilled octopus or freshly shucked oysters. CRITICS NOTES "Outstanding," applauded the judges. Colour is brilliantly clear with a greenish hue. The complex nose is laden with toasty, lemony, buttery aromas and a fresh limey lift. The palate is superbly structured and elegant with the complex flavours framed by green apple acidity. Freshness lingers on the succulent aftertaste. Longevity ensured." Winestate Magazine (AUS) December 2001 "This Clare Valley product is a classic example of mature Riesling at its best..It has the toasty complexity of aged Riesling but retains lively acidity and a greenish hue indicating years of life ahead." Jeff Collerson, Daily Telegraph (AUS) Jan 30, 2002. "A lovely big, gold, aged Riesling with buttery toasty nose showing wonderfully rich bottle age characters. Long, soft and rich buttery/toasty palate that is still very fresh and lively." Winestate Magazine (AUS) May/June 2004 AWARDS TO DATE
