Established in 1851, the House of Seppelt is one of Australia's oldest wineries and it has earned a reputation for producing premium quality wines that possess elegance and style. The Seppelt Fleur de Lys Vintage Pinot Noir Chardonnay is made at the Great Western winery in Victoria using the 'traditional champagne method'. Fleur de Lys is a blend of the classic sparkling wine grape varieties, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. The combination of this fruit, 'traditional champagne method' and a lengthy aging process, results in a wine that displays superb fruit, oak and yeast. Over recent vintages, Fleur de Lys has won over 90 medals. The 1999 vintage builds on these successes to produce a wine consistent with style and reputation of the House of Seppelt. Regional Source Sourced from cooler climate regions of Australia such as the Yarra Valley, Tumbarumba, Bright, Mornington Peninsula, Drumborg and Great Western. Vintage Conditions After good early rains and generally favourable conditions throughout spring, the Yarra Valley experienced a most unusual wet summer. The early varieties, including chardonnay handled the conditions well producing fruit with excellent regional and varietal definition. Grape Variety Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier Maturation Secondary fermentation occurred in the bottle with 2 years bottle maturation on yeast lees and disgorged in the traditional 'champenoise' method. Winemaker Comments: Steve Goodwin Colour A bright pale lemon colour with vibrant green hue and a fine and persistent mousse. Nose The nose is fresh, delicate and complex combining lemony chardonnay aromas and brioche-like bottle developed pinot noir characters. The extended maturation on yeast lees of this sparkling is reflective in the rich yeasty and nutty characters. Palate An extension of the flavoursome nose, the palate exhibits great balance with a rich, rounded creaminess. The finish is long and fine with nutty pinot noir flavours and crisp refreshing acidity.
