Vintage 2000 took place under hot and dry weather conditions providing fruit with very ripe flavours and ripe tannin structures. Displaying intense purple colour, the 2000 Spartacus shows complex ripe aromas of blackberry, leather and spice, combined with fine mocha and chocolate oak. Similar in structure and style to the 1998, rich and dense on the palate with a round tannin mouthfeel leading to a firm finish. Barrel fermented in new Russian barriques (60%) and new fine grained American oak ( 40%), the 2000 Spartacus represents the best small parcel of shiraz produced in vintage 2000. This year entirely from Punters Corners 30 year old Cellardoor block Shiraz vines picked at 14.4 baume on the 17th April. Maturation in oak for 22 months preceded bottling in February 2002.
Full red-purple; the bouquet has more concentrated fruit than the varietal, but with a similar set of aromas. Delicious dark cherry and plum fruit is the core of a fruit-dominant palate, complemented by subtle oak and fine tannins. Rating 95 Drink 2015 Date Tasted Feb 02 James Halliday
