Background Information:

Established by John Reynell in 1838, the Reynell winery enjoys the unrivalled prestige of the birthplace of South Australia’s internationally renowned wine industry and the proud home of the State’s oldest operating winery. Today the headquarters of Hardys Wines and set on 21 picturesque hectares at the gateway to the famous McLaren Vale wine region, this historic winery exudes classic charm with its restored heritage.

Tasting Note:

Deep ruby red with purple hues, aromas of blackberries, plums, licorice and cedar are evident on the lifted bouquet. A full bodied palate reveals sweet, concentrated blackberry and blueberry characters. A savoury texture with rich, ripe tannins and subtle vanillin oak characters also show. This wine will improve with careful, patient cellaring for 6-8 years.

Winemakers Notes:

The 2000 Reynell Shiraz is typical of the full-bodied style of Shiraz that can be made from McLaren Vale fruit. Parcels of fruit from selected vineyards were fermented in 7 tonne open fermenters. Samples from each fermenter were tasted 3 times each day, in order to determine the ideal time to press. The ferment was then basket pressed, ensuring extraction of only soft tannins. The wine was then transferred to oak barrels where malolactic fermentation was initiated. The finished wine was then matured in American oak for 18 months before bottling

Food Pairings:

This wine is outstanding when matched with full, rich dishes such as ox tail ragout with polenta and rabbit stew.
