2001 FOUNDATION SHIRAZ

First founded in 1903, Tatachilla has a history of producing award-winning wines in true McLaren Vale style. As Tatachilla’s flagship, Foundation Shiraz represents a commitment to excellence in both viticulture and winemaking. Selecting the best parcels of grapes from low yielding Shiraz vineyards, Foundation Shiraz epitomises the richness of superbly ripened McLaren Vale fruit.

Colour Deep dark red

Bouquet Lifted varietal aromas of licorice and dark plums with subtle smoky oak

Palate This is a wine with a dense concentration of lush ripe blackberries with spicy oak. The finish is characterised by the classic regional rolling length with dark chocolate notes and hints of black pepper.

Serving Open one hour prior and serve at room temperature. The ideal accompaniment to full flavoured dishes, hearty roast beef or braised confit of duck

Cellaring This wine has superb ageing potential if carefully cellared

Vintage

2001 was a hot and dry vintage with 30 days over 35C, allowing a very quick ripening of the grapes and very rich and intense fruit characteristics.

Vineyards

Sourced from premium sites in the heart of McLaren Vale and Blewitt Springs.

Vinification

These premium shiraz grapes were handled in small open fermenters with careful pump over and plunging with temperature of fermentation ranging between 22 to 28 degrees. This wine has been hand crafted to achieve exceptional balance between the varietal fruit flavours and oak maturation characters following 18 months in new French and American oak (30%) and the remaining wine matured in 2 year old barrels.
