Jancis Robinson--

Australian wine - more independents please

I worked my way round scores of wines independently imported into the UK, many of them very interesting, from all over Australia and will of course be reporting on my favourites in due course. In addition to these wines, chosen apparently by Kirsten Moore’s team, were representatives of 16 individual relatively new wineries with quite a range of their wines. I was particularly pleased to have the chance to taste a range of wines from Benwarin of the Hunter Valley whose wines did particularly well in last month’s Hunter Valley Wine Show.  Allan Bagley has been growing vines on some prime land around Pokolbin for years but has only had his own label since 2003. Talented and particularly conscientious young winemaker Jim Chatto makes the Benwarin wines at the large contract winery he runs (as well as producing fine wine under his own label) and has done a very good job. These wines are already available in Canada and I hope we’ll see them in the UK soon too. The buyer from Jeroboams seemed particularly interested.

Vignerons Notes

Estate grown on the Benwarin vineyard at Mistletoe Lane, Pokolbin. The season started well with good spring and early summer rain – then followed one of the hottest summers on record peaking with 46°C on new years day. By late January, the Hunter had had another 10 days of plus 40°C weather. Crop thinning and careful attention to irrigation helped reduce the stress on the vines with the result that the verdelho produced an excellent vintage.

Winemaking

The fruit was crushed, lightly pressed, and chilled immediately after harvesting. It was cool fermented in stainless steel at 12 -14°C then clarified, filtered, and bottled early to retain freshness of fruit. Sealed with Stelvin screwcap.

Alcohol:

13.7%

Tasting Notes

Straw green colour. Ripe flavours of musk, pineapple and passionfruit. A generous fruit-driven palate with good acid balance and a fine finish.

Reviews

Murray Almond – winestar.com.au

The wine is sourced from the estate vineyard at Mistletoe Lane in Pokolbin. The alcohol is 13.7% and the bottle is naturally sealed in screwcap. Tropical fruit characters hightlight pineapple and paw paw with very good spicy tropical characters. Very nice balanced palate structure with a hint of butteriness but not to overdone. Great breadth across the palate and a great long finish. Quality: 93/100 (Excellent) Value: Exceptional

Gary Walsh – winorama.com

Aromas of tropical fruit salad, pear, musk and spice with a touch of flinty reduction. On the palate there are flavours of fresh pineapple, mango, apple and spice. Really attractive fruity flavours here with nothing too heavy. It has some weight on the palate with a light glycerol texture but overall is fairly crisp and fresh. Spicy apple finish.
